Aldi has launched a ‘Best of British’ section on its website with the aim of encouraging consumers to support British businesses.

The supermarket’s new webpage features a selection of groceries including a range of meat and dairy products.

The retailer said over 80% of its sales came from British suppliers last year and that it works with around 5,000 UK suppliers.

Managing director of buying at Aldi UK, Julie Ashfield, said: “Our Best of British webpage aims to give our customers the chance to navigate British products more easily whilst supporting the thousands of local suppliers that we work with.

“We are proud to champion so many British suppliers and they are at the heart of our success, allowing us to offer our customers great British quality at the best possible prices.”

‘Immoral’ prices paid to farmers

Earlier this month, MP for West Dorset Chris Loder said that it is “immoral” how each of the ‘Big Six’ supermarkets do not pay farmers a fair price.

Loder said he wrote to each of the ‘Big Six’ – which is comprised of Aldi as well as retailers Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons and Lidl – to demand that farmers and food producers be paid a fair price.

“It’s immoral that many farmers and food producers who supply the ‘Big Six’ supermarkets are still turning a negligible profit – sometimes of less than 1p profit for the food they produce when supermarkets declare record profits,” he said.

“This is simply unacceptable. With record turnover and inflation having worked in their favour, it is incumbent upon the supermarkets to do the right thing.”
