Lincolnshire Police has thanked a local farmer for his role in rescuing people from a car stranded in a river.

The farmer used a telehandler to rescue the people after their car got stranded in a river ford in Colsterworth yesterday (Wednesday, December 27).

Water was quickly filling the inside of the car, but the local farmer was able to get them out “unharmed”, Lincolnshire Police said.

“The driver and passenger are safe, warm, and their car has since been recovered.

“Heavy rain and strong winds clearly won’t dampen our community spirit here in Lincolnshire. Thank you.”

The force took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to also thank the wider farming community for its help in clearing fallen branches from roads.

The force said it has received many calls to its Police Control Room as a result of heavy wind and rain.

The help of the farming community means that “roads remain open”, Lincolnshire Police said.

Somerset machinery thefts

Two Somerset men have been sentenced after they were found with 20 pieces of stolen farm machinery.

25-year-old Harry Hollowell of Jellicoe Road, Yeovil, and 23-year-old Vincent Bruce of Bearley Lane, Tintinhull, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to handle stolen goods.

Hollowell was sentenced to three years and 2 months imprisonment and Bruce for one year and four months. Bruce had his sentence suspended for two years.

Officers of Avon and Somerset Police’s Operation Remedy team carried out a stolen goods warrant search at a farm in South Barrow, near Sparkford, in October 2020.

Here the team discovered and seized 20 stolen machines, with further machines since recovered throughout the investigation.
