BASIS has launched a new hedgerow management course as part of its latest educational initiative.

The charity, which is focused on raising professional standards across land management and food production, said the course is aligned with the updated Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI).

The course provides information on financial support for activities like hedgerow assessments, tree maintenance, and managing hedgerows of varying heights, with agreements spanning three years.

Funding structures vary across the UK, with England leading, and Wales and Scotland developing schemes set to launch in 2025.

BASIS said the course is comprehensive and covers the spectrum of hedgerow management from initial planting to ongoing maintenance.

“Participants delve into the historical significance of hedgerows, learning key features and understanding factors contributing to their decline since the 1940s,” BASIS said.

“The curriculum blends theory with practical skills, offering insights into planting, establishment, and ongoing maintenance.

“Key course elements include exploring hedgerow benefits, encompassing positive impacts on crops, livestock, biodiversity, and their role in climate mitigation and real-world case studies.”

The course is designed for farmers, agricultural professionals and enthusiasts, and caters to those seeking to enhance their understanding and implementation of effective hedgerow management.

BASIS said the curriculum also covers legal frameworks and financial discussions for compliance with hedgerow-related legislation and financial incentives across the UK.

BASIS chief executive, Andrew Lazenby, said: “At BASIS, we believe in the power of education to drive positive change in agriculture.

“Our new hedgerow management course reflects our commitment to preserving our agricultural heritage, fostering sustainability, and contributing to environmental conservation.”
