Registrations are now open for a continuing professional development (CPD) course to help overseas vets and vet nurses, adapt to working in the UK.

The course, which is run by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and Veterinary Defence Society (VDS), will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 11 and 12, 2019.

The programme has been designed for overseas-qualified veterinary surgeons and nurses during their first two years of working in the UK and is also suitable for those considering working here as an introduction to the UK veterinary professions.

During the two days, vets will learn key information and specific skills needed to practice in the UK, as well as being made aware of how British law applies to their roles as veterinary professionals.

The programme

Day one of the course is facilitated by the RCVS. The focus of the first day will be to provide the opportunity for vets and vet nurses who are either contemplating working in the UK, or who have recently started working here, to learn about the regulations that apply and the support that is available.

Day one presentations will cover a variety of subjects, including:

  • What it means to be a veterinary professional in the UK;
  • Developing your skills and knowledge;
  • Further support available to you as a UK veterinary professional;
  • Securing your dream job in the UK;
  • RCVS initiatives.

This day is free to attend and tickets can be reserved on Eventbrite.

The second day is facilitated by the VDS and uses experienced facilitators and simulated clients (played by actors) to provide an interactive learning experience for delegates.

By recreating situations participants have found challenging, the facilitators will give attendees specific communication tools to deal with them effectively in the future.

Both days aim to help:

  • Build confidence communicating with clients in a non-native tongue;
  • Help with some of the specific cultural challenges overseas professionals may face while working here;
  • Provide information regarding your obligations around Continuing Professional Development;
  • The legislation and regulations that apply when working in the UK.

Day two costs £150 (not including VAT) to attend. Tickets for day two can be purchased directly with VDS Training via email at: [email protected]. There is no requirement for delegates to attend both days.
