Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) is one of a number of organisations joining the Cows on Tour team to teach children about farming over the next week.

For one week in May, ‘Cows on Tour’ – a group of passionate and proactive Welsh farmers – will be unloading their extensive knowledge and experience at five schools to educate children and the public about where their food comes from.

The group recently trekked up Mount Snowdown – with its distinctive life-size model cow – in a bid to raise money to support the educational week.

As well as HCC, their famous fibreglass cow, which conquered the Snowdon Challenge last weekend, will be in tow along with real-life animals, machinery and lots of farm produce for the children to see and sample.

Tasty dishes to try will include PGI Welsh Lamb and PGI Welsh Beef.

HCC’s Elwen Roberts said: “We are looking forward to working with the Cows on Tour team next week on a series of lively and practical activities.

“It will be a fantastic opportunity to interact with children who don’t necessarily know and understand how their food is produced, and help them gain a better understanding of how to include locally sourced produce as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

“Cows on Tour is a great initiative which we are proud to support. Our involvement will include providing commentary for butchery demonstrations at Maesteg and running cooking demonstrations at Aberystwyth and Wrexham.

“The team will distribute 1,000 of our children’s activity booklets during the course of the week and we have supplied resources for their activity packs.”

The week-long tour will see the cows travel to:

  • May 13 – Fishguard;
  • May 14 – Maesteg;
  • May 15 – Aberystwyth;
  • May 16 – Wrexham;
  • May 17 – Newtown;
  • May 18-19 – The Smallholding and Countryside Festival in Builth Wells.

Chairman of Cows on Tour, Matthew Shervington-Jones, said, “It matters to everyone involved on our roadshow that we tell the positive farming story and promote our fabulous industry.

It is vitally important that children learn about the countryside and where the food on their plate comes from.

Cows on Tour has been running for five years and is run by a group of volunteers. This year they are raising funds for RABI and the DPJ Foundation.
