Scottish auctioneers institute appoints new president for centenary year

The Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers in Scotland (IAAS) has appointed a new president, as it marks its centenary year.

John Roberts, who offers 43 years of experience as both an auctioneer, and previously as executive chair of United Auctions, succeeds Alan Hutcheon after a three-year tenure.

According to the Roberts, livestock marts continue to play a central role in the rural economy.

He highlighted how the marts give farmers access to high value markets while also being an important social and business hub for the community.

Roberts said: “It’s important to ensure that policy and business continue to give the marts the opportunity to thrive, and I am very pleased to lead the Council at this time.”

As president, Roberts will lead a council representing the corporate and individual IAAS members.

According to the institute, it serves as a representative for local Scottish livestock marts.

Its aim is to protect and promote the place of marts in Scotland’s agricultural sector while also advancing professional standards and qualifications.

The IAAS celebrates its centenary this year, having been formed 100 years ago following a collapse in livestock prices after the First World War.

Under economic and political pressure, mart businesses sought greater co-operation and a collective voice to represent their interests and promote the auction system.

The institute has played an important role in the ongoing bluetongue outbreak by liaising with Scottish Government, vets and other industry stakeholders to find pragmatic solutions.

According to the IAAS, their efforts avoided consequences which would have impacted marts and farming customers’ businesses.

IAAS executive director, Neil Wilson said: “John has a very impressive background in the sector and brings broad experience of the business challenges, operations and opportunities for marts.

“He has been part of the Institute for many years and he fully understands the landscape we are working in and what we want to achieve for our members. I look forward to working with him,” he added.
