At world level, milk production increased by someĀ 825 000 t in the first 5 months of the year, mainlyĀ due to the US, according to latest figures from the Milk Market Observatory (MMO).

However, it says latest figures about US milkĀ production in June show a less dynamic increaseĀ (+ 0.7%).

Milk production is also increasing in China,Ā Russia and Belarus, it says.

Meanwhile the MMO says world exports are decreasing,Ā reflecting demand slow down.

In spite of the it highlights that EU exports of butterĀ and cheese have benefited from the relativeĀ absence of US exports.

The US confirm theirĀ position as the number one destination for EU dairy exports,Ā followed by China, Saudi Arabia and Algeria.

The MMO says ChinaĀ considerably reduced its dairy imports over the first five months of 2015, while JapanĀ and South Korea confirmed their dynamic demand.

Irish milk production wasĀ down in Q1 due to quota constraints, but aĀ surge in production has been observed inĀ Q2.

According to Teagasc lower milk prices may temper milkĀ production growth in Q3. It says an annualĀ increase in Irish milk production of 10%Ā looks likely, with considerable regional andĀ farm level variability around that figure.

Consumption

EU per capita consumption (retail sales) in the lastĀ 5 years (2010-14) increased for cheese, creamĀ and butter, but decreased for milk and yoghurt, according to the MMO.

It says contrary to liquid, flavoured and fruited yoghurt,Ā per capita consumption of plain yoghurt slightlyĀ increased. In 2014, total cheese consumptionĀ increased by 1.6% (butter by 3.7%), mainly drivenĀ by upward industry use.

Overall the MMO says market sentiment remains bearish, with noĀ improvement in sight for the near future. TheĀ necessary supply side correction has notĀ materialised so far.
