Robert Beckett, a well-known figure within the British pork sector who died earlier this year, has won the 2025 David Black Award in honour of his meaningful commitment to the national pig industry.

The award recognises his 24-year contribution to Yorkwold since joining the pig production business back in 2001.

Over that time, Beckett rose through the Yorkwold management ladder, most recently running its indoor breed-to-finish enterprise as managing director.

During his time at the company, he built a reputation for “clear leadership, high welfare standards and constructive collaboration.”

Beckett also helped shape the industry through his time on the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB) Pork Sector Council, the Pig Health and Welfare Council’s welfare committee, and the Real Welfare review group.

David Black Award

Beckett was announced as the winner of the 2025 David Black Award at this year’s National Pig Awards in London, which is hosted by the magazine company Pig World, in conjunction with the National Pig Association and AHDB.

The award is presented annually by the AHDB and is given to individuals who have made an exceptional impact on the pork sector.

Robert’s wife Andrea and their children, Ollie and Grace accepted the award on his behalf at the event.

Beckett family

When speaking at the event, Andrea Beckett said: “As a family, we are all aware of the commitment, hard work, and support Bob gave to the pig industry.

“He was always one who challenged, never seeking praise or reward; he worked almost to the end, his passion and drive hardly wavering even though his health was.”

She expressed her appreciation for the individuals who nominated her husband for the award and also thanked everyone who worked alongside him throughout the industry, describing them as friends rather than colleagues.

AHDB

AHDB Pork Sector director, Mark Haighton stated that Beckett’s career “exemplified the values behind the David Black Award.”

Haighton added: “His leadership and integrity were evident in everything he undertook, and his contributions helped steer important conversations within the industry.

“His influence extended well beyond his own business, and it is a privilege for AHDB to recognise his legacy.”
