Founded earlier this year, the British Game Alliance (BGA) has already taken huge strides to grow the game meat market as Michelin-starred restaurants and national meat suppliers sign up as BGA stockists.

Now an online registration process has been created allowing retailers of all sizes to register as BGA stockists and source their game directly from BGA-approved processors.

The BGA has already secured several new outlets for its Assured British Game:

  • Wright Brothers, the acclaimed seafood restaurant chain which also operates a wholesale arm supplying 250 top restaurants and hotels in London;
  • Michelin-starred Nobu, London;
  • Ottolenghi, which operates six restaurants across the country;
  • Carnivore, Reynolds’s fresh meat division, which distributes nationally to over 2000 sites;
  • Premium butcher Billfields, which supplies some of the best-known London restaurants.

The BGA was established in 2018 to grow the market for quality British game meat by introducing credible shoot assurance and an effective marketing operation.

A spokesman said: “These early wins show the food market really values this approach.”

Nobu London’s executive chef Mark Edwards said sustainability standards was one of the most important factors for him when buying.

“It’s fantastic the BGA has initiated an assurance scheme for the game sector. I look forward to procuring game this season from a BGA source, supporting their sustainable and ethical standards,” he said.

Chris Stephens, head of purchasing for Ottolenghi added: “Now the BGA has an assurance scheme for game; we are really positive about serving it in our restaurants.”

How it works

The new online tool, hosted on the BGA website, allows food businesses from farm shops and butchers to wholesalers and distributors to enter their details and their requirements.

This information is then sent to all BGA-registered game processors, who in turn ensure that retailers are supplied with Assured British Game from BGA-member shoots.

Matt Tough, commercial director at the British Game Alliance, said: “To strengthen the market and bolster the relationship between the game and food industries, it’s essential we get our members’ produce into the hands of stockists – whether they’re big wholesalers or artisan farm shops.

“This new tool will help us to do exactly that. For the first time, it gives stockists direct and competitive access to assured, top quality game that their customers will love. It’s a real game changer and takes the game industry to the next level.”

To access the tool, stockists must go to the BGA website and choose ‘Find Processors’.
