Police appeal for information after tractor ‘set alight’

Police in Northern Ireland have appealed for information and witnesses after a tractor was "set alight" in Co. Armagh.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has confirmed that the tractor incident was one of two arson attacks in Co. Armagh this week.

Speaking on behalf of the PSNI, Sergeant Wilson said that officers had "attended a report of a fire at a house at School Terrace in Newtownhamilton".

“A second report was also received at around midnight that a tractor had been set alight at another property in the Tullyneil Road area," Sergeant Wilson added.

Blaze

According to the PSNI, it had been supported by colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, who had "managed to extinguish the blaze" at the house in in Newtownhamilton.

“Smoke damage was caused to the entire property, however thankfully, there were no reports of any injuries.

“At this stage, it is believed that the fire was started deliberately, and our enquiries are ongoing this morning to establish the circumstances of the incident," Sergeant Wilson added.

Police appeal

According to the PSNI, the tractor fire was dealt with the occupants of the house.

However, they confirmed that "the full cab of the vehicle was burnt out as a result of the incident".

Sergeant Wilson added: “A car was reported to have been seen leaving the area in the direction of Newtownhamilton.

“As our enquiries continue into both reports this morning, which we believe at this stage may be linked, we are appealing to anyone with any information which may assist us to get in touch."

Rural crime

The PSNI has repeatedly advised that "good neighbours and vigilance are the most effective deterrent against crime".

"Remember that rural crime exists in many forms.

"Regularly check the fields where the stock are grazing; keep the hedges, fences and gates in good repair. Keep all sheds and stockyard gates closed and locked.

"Secure or immobilise vehicles, plant, trailers and equipment when not in use.

"Remove valuable machinery from fields overnight and keep items of value such as quads and cattle trailers in a securely locked shed, out of sight," the PSNI has said.
