The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has called on families to support British poultry farmers by buying locally produced turkeys this Christmas, as today (Friday, December 5) marks the NFU’s ninth annual #BuyMyTurkey Day.
The social media campaign aims to promote the benefits of buying British turkeys for Christmas, whether bought directly from local farms, the butcher, or supermarkets.
Consumers who wish to buy direct from local farms can use the NFU’s online turkey finder tool to locate their nearest producers.
For those who are buying their turkeys from a butcher, the NFU is encouraging them to ask if the turkey is British and which farm it has been sourced from.
Supermarket shoppers are also being advised to look out for packaging with the Red Tractor logo to ensure that the turkey they are buying is British.
Campaign
Jonathan Smith, who is the NFU’s seasonal poultry group chair, said the goal with this year’s campaign is “to highlight the connection between the farm gate and the festive table.”
“Christmas is all about bringing people together and British turkey farmers are proud to play a part in that tradition.
“#BuyMyTurkey Day is a celebration of all the skill and dedication that goes into producing high-quality food.
“It is also a reminder that by choosing British, the public are supporting farming families and rural communities across the country,”
Turkeys
Another focus of this year’s campaign is emphasising the benefits of buying a whole turkey.
Smith added: “A whole turkey is not only a fantastic centrepiece, but also a sustainable choice at a time when many families may be keeping an eye on spending.
“It is versatile, nutritious and perfect for creating meals well beyond Christmas Day.”
Any poultry farmers, who are NFU members and want to add their business to the online turkey finder, can find out more information on the NFU’s website.
