Fire crews in Wales used water jets to bring a barn fire involving bales under control earlier this week.

At 7:17a.m on Monday, July 28, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Ammanford, Carmarthen, Port Talbot and Lampeter Fire Stations were called to an incident in Cwmifor in Llandeilo.

Crews responded to a fire involving one barn and several hay bales that were alight on their arrival.

The bales were removed from the barn using farm machinery and spread out for crews to extinguish the fire.

Crews utilised four hose reel jets, two main jets, two thermal imaging cameras and small gear to extinguish the fire.

Crews left the scene at 11:34a.m, with the crew from Ammanford Fire Station revisiting the address at around 4:00p.m to monitor and dampen down any remaining hotspots.

Free bale temperature testing

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has said it offers free temperature and moisture content tests for bales, as well as a variety of other ways to keep you and your farm safe from fire.

Depending on the readings they receive, fire crews will then work with farmers to formulate a plan to manage the risk of spontaneous combustion.

To book a free bale temperature testing visit, farmers are urged to contact the fire service farm liaison officer. If the bales are smouldering or on fire, the advice is to call 999.
